Does subliminal priming of free response choices depend on task set or automatic response activation?Patrick A. O’Connor & W. Trammell Neill - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (2):280-287.
In a task requiring speeded bidirectional responses to arrow symbols , “free choice” responses to interspersed bidirectional stimuli are influenced by masked directional primes . By varying stimulus–response compatibility, we tested whether this priming effect is mediated by the conscious instructional set, or instead by pre-existing directional associations to the symbols. In two experiments, one group of participants was instructed to respond with the hand consistent with the implied direction of the arrow symbols, while another group was instructed to make (...)

    Sedation in the terminally ill — a clinical perspective.Margaret O’Connor, David W. Kissane & Odette Spruyt - 1999 - Monash Bioethics Review 18 (3):17-27.
This article discusses the place of sedation in the care of the terminally ill, as used in the practice of palliative care using case studies, clinical pragmatism forms the theoretical framework from which to elucidate the varying part that sedation plays in the overall management of a person facing the end of life. We contend that when used appropriately, sedation is an ethical and legitimate intervention that enhances comfort at the end of life and ought not sedate the person onto (...)

    Adorno.

    Adorno.Brian O'Connor - 2005 - New York: Routledge.
Theodor W. Adorno was one of the foremost philosophers and social theorists of the post-war period. Crucial to the development of Critical Theory, his highly original and distinctive but often difficult writings not only advance questions of fundamental philosophical significance, but provide deep-reaching analyses of literature, art, music sociology and political theory. In this comprehensive introduction, Brian O’Connor explains Adorno’s philosophy for those coming to his work for the first time, through original new lines of interpretation. Beginning with an (...)

Must analysis of meaning follow analysis of form? A time course analysis.Laurie B. Feldman, Petar Milin, Kit W. Cho, Fermín Moscoso del Prado Martín & Patrick A. O’Connor - 2015 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9:119627.
Many models of word recognition assume that processing proceeds sequentially from analysis of form to analysis of meaning. In the context of morphological processing, this implies that morphemes are processed as units of form prior to any influence of their meanings. Some interpret the apparent absence of differences in recognition latencies to targets (SNEAK) in form and semantically similar (sneaky-SNEAK) and in form similar and semantically dissimilar (sneaker-SNEAK) prime contexts at an SOA of 48 ms as consistent with this claim. (...)

Philosophy and Kafka.Paul Alberts, Ronald Bogue, Chris Danta, Paul Haacke, Rainer Nagele, Brian O'Connor, Andrew R. Russ, Peter Schwenger, Kevin W. Sweeney, Dimitris Vardoulakis & Isak Winkel Holm - 2013 - Lexington Books.
Philosophy and Kafka is a collection of original essays interrogating the relationship of literature and philosophy. The essays either discuss specific philosophical commentaries on Kafka’s work, consider the possible relevance of certain philosophical outlooks for examining Kafka’s writings, or examine Kafka’s writings in terms of a specific philosophical theme, such as communication and subjectivity, language and meaning, knowledge and truth, the human/animal divide, justice, and freedom.

Feminist Interpretations of Ludwig Wittgenstein.Naomi Scheman & Peg O'Connor (eds.) - 2002 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
The original essays in this volume, while written from diverse perspectives, share the common aim of building a constructive dialogue between two currents in philosophy that seem not readily allied: Wittgenstein, who urges us to bring our words back home to their ordinary uses, recognizing that it is our agreements in judgments and forms of life that ground intelligibility; and feminist theory, whose task is to articulate a radical critique of what we say, to disrupt precisely those taken-for-granted agreements in (...)

    G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts.Jeffery Kinlaw, Nathan Ross, John Russon, Brian O'Connor, Kevin Thompson, Brian O'connor & Alison Stone - 2015 - Acumen Publishing.
The thought of G. W. F. Hegel has had a deep and lasting influence on a wide range of philosophical, political, religious, aesthetic, cultural and scientific movements. But, despite the far-reaching importance of Hegel's thought, there is often a great deal of confusion about what he actually said or believed. This is an invaluable introduction for philosophical beginners and a useful reference source for more advanced scholars and researchers.
